In 2020, the new rule takes effect and any player on a 0.4 player protection contract will now have their player protection extended one year if they spend the whole year on the injured reserve list, so teams aren't penalized one year due to injury.
This rule is being implemented due to the large volume of support it received in the 2019 poll taken.
NOTE: If a player protected player takes one at bat or pitches to even one batter during the year, NO extension exists, since the player wasn't forced to miss the whole season due to injury.

Just pointing this out to all the new owners in the league and it reinforces the earlier post.
If a PP player misses the whole year due to injury, TJS, etc., they now get an extra year of control at PP to make up for the year they lost. It only applies if the player missed the whole season. One at bat, one batter faced and it voids the extra year. That is done so teams don't lose valuable 0.4 years for the player. It starts in the 2020 season.
