How do franchise tags work?
-Franchise tags are applied to players with expiring contracts. When a franchise tag is applied, the Gopherball Franchise will inherit the players real life MLB contract or salary, according to Cots contracts. www.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/
-Players in arbitration IF they have an expiring PP contract will be tagged for 2 arbitration years - no more.
How do Restricted Franchise tags work?
-RFA's only occur once a year. They are known by the teams tagging players with their RFA tag. In January, each week we'll put up about 1/4 of them for four weeks for bid. The salary structure to bid is different (see the rules for that), but the same concept as UFA. You submit your bid to mlbpa, the mlbpa account will announce the winners. Only difference (besides the salary structure you can offer), is that the team owning the RFA tag has the right to match that offer, and thus retain the player. So although you may win with the highest bid, you may not actually win the player. There is also the caveat that with bids of $5+, you will give up one of your future drafted players in exchange for signing this RFA.
What is prospect protection?
-Prospect Protection is a type of Gopherball contract that applies to players in the beginning of their career. A player with the contract you could technically own indefinitely if he never reaches the 50IP or 150AB at the MLB level. If you own a player who never makes it to the MLB, you could technically own him forever.
-Example:You own Roy Hobbs on a PP contract. He pitched 7.1 innings in 1979. While you can play him in your lineup, until he hits 50IP for his career, you can carry him over for years. But lets say in 1980 he goes over the 50IP. He vaults from a MiLB player(in our eyes) to a Prospect Protected contract. It's still $400,000, but now he has a time limit. So after the next season (1980) his prospect protected years will be 1981,1982,1983, and 1984. Four years. This is true of anyone who is on such a contract.
Other examples:
Gary Sheffield PP Years are 1990,1991,1992,1993
Sandy Koufax PP Years are 1957,1958,1959,1960
Why does my player qualify for prospect protection, but has a salary that is not .4PP?
-Sometimes players do not enter the league via a PP contract. Most rookies and draftees do, however someone who becomes a top prospect out of nowhere, may not be owned and may have been obtained via Unrestricted Free Agency. If the winning bid was not a PP contract, this could put a player on a Gopherball Contract.
Dan Straily is a good example of this. If he was unowned entering 2012. In 2009 he was a 24th round draft pick, and was overlooked by the Athletics owner at the time. During 2012 he started getting a lot of attention in blogs and from prospect followers as he hit AA and was very successful. Being unowned in Gopherball, he was posted mid-season for UFA, and was won by the Pirates for three years $600,000

Winner: Pittsburgh Pirates - 3 years (12-14)- 0.6M

He is now signed until 2014 with this contract. Since he exceeded the 50IP threshold in 2013, his PP years will be 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The owner of Straily can use a Franchise tag after 2014 if they wish to retain him, and obtain him for his final three PP seasons at a cost of $400,000.
How can I verify my salaries are correct?
-Your Proboards roster and Fantrax rosters should be in alignment. Always ensure that salaries are correct on both, and if there is an inconsistency, contact any of the admins.
-Salaries stem from one of three places: a past signing through UFA (Unrestricted Free Agency- 95% of FA signings come from UFA) or RFA (Restricted Free Agency- a small annual pool signed in January each year), a past signing through using a Franchise tag, or a past signing via adds through the MLB draft. If you want to verify a signing is correct, using the proboards search function, search the player and see which method was used to obtain the player. You can see the breakdown by year if you find the post where the player was signed through UFA or RFA. If kept via a franchise tag, the salary should align with Cot's Contracts page. If signed via draft or IFA, the player should be on a PP ($400,000) contract.
How do I sign a player?
-Via UFA. Each week, starting once RFA ends, players that are free agents (ideally the fantrax FA pool is correct and can tell you who is available) can be posted in the UFA board. Each week from Sunday to Wednesday, you are allowed to post players for all owners to bid on. After the player has been posted, you submit via PM to the 'mlbpa' account your bids (bid guidelines can be found in the rules). Follow these salary minimums (based on years bid there is a minimum salary) and send the bid with your salary offer to the mlbpa account. You submit an eligible bid once the player has been posted for UFA up until Friday midnight (EST) of that same week. The commissioner logs into the mlbpa account after that (usually saturday morning) and will announce the winning bids for each player.
How do I release a player?
-To release a player, post in the Waivers section on proboards and state the waiver fee. .4 and .5 contracts have no fee, otherwise the fee is 50%. Contracts for multiple years can have the fee rolled into the current year prior to 7/31. For example a player signed for 3 years at $6M each year can either be waived with a $3M fee for each of the next three seasons, or the lump sum fee can be paid as a $9M fee in the current season.
Do we have a minor league draft?
-No.,Minors drafted in the current season are allowed to be claimed by their MLB counterpart. If you own the Mariners, you thus have rights to select any Mariners IFA or MILB draft signings so long as they are claimed in the same calendar year they sign in. For example, the Mariners sign Ichiro in March 2001. The Mariners owner has a right to claim Ichiro anytime in 2001 up until December 31. If the player is not claimed by then, Ichiro becomes a UFA and can be posted effective the Week 1 of 2002 UFA. All players claimed are claimed on a PP contract.
Can a commissioner clarify, a team needs cap space for RFA but do we need a roster spot or can we release a player after award?
-You can release a player after winning an RFA to free a roster spot.
Also do RFAs on a team count against the roster or get added back once a contract is matched?
RFA's take up a roster spot on the team that owns the player up until the match is declined
Players who were rookies last year but no longer qualify due to IPs or ABs, have to be promoted by when?
-January 1st, the same deadline as rookies and tags. So if someone this season exceeds the minimum ABs or IP, they can take a milb roster spot up up until December 31st.
